 Computer Update From Mrs. Mobley…

Kindergarten has been doing a wonderful job in computer class!  Students are in the computer lab every Monday and Tuesday.  At the beginning of the year, we reviewed the basic parts of the computer and how they are used.  Websites the children have explored include:   www.nickjr.com, www.dole5aday.com, www.pbskids.org , and www.hersheys.com.   These websites offer a wide variety of fun, interactive games and activities that help students acquire basic computer skills and provide learning opportunities in reading, spelling and math.  The students have also created beautiful pictures using Microsoft Paint and KidPix.  During Character Counts! Week, the students created computer drawings of caring (one of the six pillars of good character).  I encourage you to work with your child at home on his/her computer skills by visiting fun websites together.

May- 2009

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe that our last month of school is here. The children have come a long way since that first day of school in September. We have enjoyed watching your children grow and learn. We will miss each and everyone, and pray that you have a fun-filled, safe and wonderful summer. The children will be very busy, for there is still a lot of work to be done in the remaining weeks of school. Please read below-

Language Arts- We will complete the last unit in language arts. We will identify, write and review the initial sounds of the letters: Hh, Ww, Vv, Qq, Jj, Yy,Zz and the final sound of Xx. We will review blending with all the short vowel sounds. We will continue to review beginning and ending sounds, word families, building sentences and our sight words. We will add these sight words to our word boxes: with, was, see and of.  You can challenge your child by asking them to spell the sight words verbally and on paper We will continue journaling. Please encourage your child to write sentences using their sight words. Attached is another copy of the Dolch word list. This summer add to your child’s word box from this list as they master words. This month comprehension skills will include talking about cause and effect, making inferences and categorizing.  READ-READ-READ with your child over the summer. Make the reading interactive. Please continue to practice handwriting ( numbers, letters, words, spacing, on the line) using the remaining pages in the writing notebook.

 Math- We will-

bulletIdentify numbers to 100; identify even and odd numbers to 10
bulletCount by 2’s;act out some more and some went away stories

bulletIdentify doubles (equal sets) and symmetrical designs
bulletReview all coins including quarters and dollar
bulletReview ½,1/4. and whole
bulletMeasure and compare height and length
bulletDiscuss day/night, morning, noon and evening

Religion- We will complete the unit “God’s love teaches me to love”.

We will continue to learn about the mass. We will learn more about our Blessed Mother and have a May crowning in our class. We will discuss the Ascension and Pentecost. We are also learning the “Glory Be to the Father” and Morning Offering.

Science- We will continue our discussion of insects and metamorphosis and release our butterflies when they emerge. We will learn about how animals change in the spring.

Social Studies- We will learn about our country, it’s symbols and heroes and why we celebrate Memorial Day, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. We will discuss the importance of summer safety and physical fitness.
