First grade is an exciting time because the children learn so much.  We love to watch the children grow. To help ease the transition into first grade, we strongly recommend that you continue to review with your child over the summer the skills they mastered in kindergarten, especially these:

  the 24 sight words

Practice reading from the "little readers"

The list of decodable short vowel words

Without copying, neatly write the uppercase and lowercase letters both in and out of sequence

Identifying all letters in and out of sequence, and recognize the consonant sounds and short vowel

Correctly spell and neatly write his or her first and last name         without copying.

Follow a sequence of 3 oral directions.

  Color within boundaries

Sit quietly with out interrupting and listen for ten minutes

Must tie shoelaces, buckle buckles, button buttons, and zip zippers

The children are asked to complete a packet of math papers over the summer. Please follow Sister Joan’s directions.

Identify and write numerals 0 to 30

   Count to 30

Recognize a penny, a nickel, and a dime

It is very important to expose your child to books. Try to read to your child regularly and have your child read to you. There are many activities you can do to accompany a book.

Prior to reading have your child tell the story from the pictures/photos.

Ask questions about the story as you read.  Have your child answer in complete sentences.

Help your child to make predictions.

Have your child change the ending of the story.

Ask your child to re-tell the story in his own words.

This is a general supply list for all first graders. Your child’s teacher may have a few more requests.
