J. Stuart Ablon,
Ph.D.,
is Associate Director of the Collaborative Problem Solving Institute in
the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. He
specializes in the treatment of explosive, inflexible, easily frustrated
children and adolescents and is co-author of
Treating
Explosive Kids: The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach. He is also
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Ablon's research
focuses on the process and outcome of psychosocial interventions. He has
also authored numerous articles, chapters and scientific papers on
behavioral assessment and psychosocial interventions for children with
disruptive behavior disorders. Dr. Ablon's research has been funded by,
amongst others, the National Institute of Health, the American
Psychological Association, the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Institute, and
the Endowment for the Advancement of Psychotherapy.
Dr. Ablon received his
doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California at
Berkeley and completed his pre-doctoral and postdoctoral training at
Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Differentiated Discipline: Understanding and Teaching Challenging Kids
using The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach
Abstract:
In this cornerstone presentation, Dr. Ablon
will describe the dire need for individualized discipline to meet the
needs of our most challenging students. He will present a new philosophy
and explanation to help understand challenging behavior in the classroom
and discuss the ramifications of this alternative explanation for how we
teach challenging students using an approach called Collaborative
Problem Solving.
