Dear 2nd grade parents,

Wow, where has this year gone?  The past few months have been busy with the Christmas holidays, New Years, Valentine's Day and Catholic Schools Week.  We hope you enjoyed your visitation here at St. Ursula.  The children are continuing to grow and mature each day.  They are becoming even more responsible and smarter with each passing week.

2C has been reading a lot of fun stories.  We have learned more about the rainforests with Fernando's Gift and we took a tour of the USA in The Best Vacation Ever.  Ask your child about the Wright Brothers, country music and line dancing, the Alamo, the Carlsbad Caverns, the Grand Canyon and the La Brea Tar Pits.  I told the students that I hope they are able to see all those places in person one day!  We are now learning more about bats and with the help of some spotters, the children leaned backward over their desks to discover what it feels like to be a bat hanging upside down!

The children are learning more spelling and vocabulary words each day.  We have been learning about pronouns in Grammar.  In Writing, we have been writing persuasive letters and are now writing a compare and contrast paragraph.  Look for the writing books to come home in the next week or so.

Math is going well.  We continue to practice and review math facts and regrouping and borrowing into the hundreds.  In the past few weeks we have been learning to tell time and count money.  We will move onto measurement and geometry next.

First Communion is getting closer and we continue to learn more about the Mass.  Please remember to attend church each Sunday so the children will be prepared for their First Communion.  We are in the season of Lent right now and the children have made Lenten promises.  Please talk with them about their promises and see how they are doing with keeping their promises.  Also, with Easter approaching it is a good time to take the children to the Sacrament of Reconciliation again.

Multicultural Week has been on our minds for the past few weeks as we prepare our presentation on Congo.  We are looking forward to traveling to the countries of Mexico, Russia, Cuba, Nigeria, Madagascar and Kenya on March 3rd.  Thanks so much for your help and donations for our presentations.  Thanks especially to Blessy's mom for bringing in clothing and a VHS tape of Congolese dancing.  Thanks also for the parent volunteers willing to come in during our presentations.  Here are some of the events taking place in March:

March 3-5 Multicultural Days
March 5 Report Cards
March 8 Spaghetti Dinner
March 11 Burger King
March 16-20 Book Fair -- We will be attending on Wednesday -- I'll let you know the time.  Parents are invited to come with your child.
March 18 Recycle Day
March 19 11:50am dismissal
March 28 Father Daughter Dance

Have a Lenten Season filled with peace, reconciliation and growth in your commitment to your Christian faith and serving others.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Schneider
