Hello!

Introduction

My name is Mrs. Ruberry, and I am the Art teacher for grades 4 through 8 at St. Ursula School.  The Art Club (for grades  6-8), which meets after school once a week is also moderated by me. I have been at St. Ursula's for sixteen years. I taught 3rd grade for the first four years.

I have an undergraduate degree from Goucher College, a masters  from  Loyola College, and am certified by the state of  Maryland. Every year I take another class (or two) to learn something new. This past summer I took a class to learn how to update this website.

Although I am not a Catholic school alumna, my own grown children are graduates of Catholic schools. In my spare time I enjoy, sewing, scrap-booking, collecting antiques, drawing and painting (of course!), exercising and traveling with my husband. I love spending time with my three grandchildren.

Objectives

St. Ursula's  follows the newly updated Archdiocese of Baltimore standards  for Visual Arts, which is based on the National Visual Arts Standards.  A rubric is set up for each student assignment.

Because I see students every other week, many times I have students do preparation work for upcoming projects as homework. At times, I send projects home to be completed. These assignments are a part of the student's grade.

Middle school students (6th, 7th and 8th grade) do take notes in class, and should have a section in their copybooks for Art notes. Usually it is vocabulary relevant to class work. It is important that students get in the habit of studying this vocabulary one night a week (10-15 minutes), whether or not they think they have Art that week or not. This helps keep the vocabulary  fresh in their minds. Quizzes/tests will be given on vocabulary/notes. Middle school students also do in-class drawing exercises called Creative Sketching. These are graded.

Student work is posted during the school year in the lunch room. Twice a year, during the Christmas and Spring Concerts, works are chosen to be displayed in the auditorium. Families are encouraged to come view this exhibit in the hour prior to the concerts.

See the calendar for dates.

I'm looking forward to a "berry" productive year of learning with your children!
