ELEMENTS OF ART

Do you know the Elements of Art?

1. _______________ This Element has direction, can be curved, straight, zigzag, thick or thin, light or dark.

2. _______________ This Element can be organic or geometric. It can be an outline or solid, but it is always 2-dimensional.

3. _______________  Artists use a "wheel" to chart this Element. This element is broken down into groups on the wheel: primary, secondary, intermediate, complementary, analogous, triadic.

4. _______________  The lightness or darkness shown in a work of art. Artists employ many techniques to express this Element, including adding water to the paint, shading with a pencil, hatching and crosshatching with pencil, adding white or black to the paint or other media.

5. _______________  The way something feels or looks like it may feel. Sometimes in painting and drawing the artist uses different techniques to create a surface that looks bumpy, smooth or shiny. In sculpture or multimedia the actual feel is created with tools or materials.

6. _______________  Three dimensional art, works that have length, width and depth use this Element. Many times the viewer can walk around the object, or turn it around to see many sides. Sculpture and architecture always employ this Element.

7. _______________  This Element can be positive or negative, or it can illustrate the illusion of distance by using perspective, overlapping, proportion and size. This Element is used by an artist in every work of art.
