Description:
Presentations in English. Examples in Spanish but easily
transferable to other languages.
QUIA
Sr. Stacy Gunnip (Mother Mary
Lange School) will do a demonstration of “Quia”, a web-based
program that provides quizzes and activities for language
students that can be accessed through the Internet. This is
a hands-on presentation so you can personally experience the
site and play some of the activities and quizzes. There will
be useful information on how to subscribe to “Quia” as well
as how you can use it without subscribing. Grade level:
elementary, middle & high school.
Magic & Music
Mrs. Sue Fredericks (St. Pius X School) will talk to us about the success she’s had
with music in the foreign language classroom. Grade level:
elementary & middle school
Numbers,
Numbers & More Numbers or Applying Numbers 0 to Several
Million in Number Games in the Target Language
Mrs.
Barbara G. Chapolini (St. Joseph School, Cockeysville) says
that students often assume that they know enough about
numbers in Spanish if they can count from one to twenty.
Textbooks often underestimate the ability of students to use
numbers in the target language beyond one hundred. Using a
variety of games, the presenter has found even the youngest
students are excited to express figures into the millions.
Participants will take part in games including, The
Telephone Game, More or Less, The Penny Game,
and
Baseball Math. Grade level: elementary & middle school

Sharing Forum
For most of
us foreign language teachers, we derive the greatest benefit
from simply sharing classroom-tested ideas that worked.
Bring along twenty copies of two activities (and all the
applicable details) that you have used successfully in the
classroom. If it’s music, bring the CD, a copy of the lyrics
and a hand-out with a description, e.g. title,
author/producer, cost. If it’s an assignment, bring copies
of the student directions and your grading rubric. If it’s a
classroom activity, bring everything you would use so you
can demonstrate it as well as written directions (so we
don’t forget the details when we go home!)
Hospitality
will start at 8:30. Teachers need to bring their own lunch;
drinks will be provided.
