The Sacraments of Initiation

Baptism is the first sacrament we celebrate; we are freed of original sin and welcomed into the Church. We can be baptized only once. The celebrant is usually a Priest or Deacon but anyone can baptize in an emergency. The essentials of the rite are when pouring of water or immersion into water say the words: "(Name), I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Four signs used at Baptism are chrism, lighted candle, water, and white garment

Confirmation completes our Baptism. We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and the grace to live as Christians. We can be confirmed only once. The celebrant is a Bishop or Priest. The essentials of the rite are laying on of the hand and anointing with chrism on the forehead with the words: "(Name), be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit." In the sacrament of Confirmation we receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit (p.223) to help us grow as Catholic Christians. We give witness to our faith in Jesus by the way we live. The signs of the Spirit's presence in our lives are called the Fruits of the Holy Spirit(p223). Two signs used at Confirmation are Anointing with Chrism and Laying on of Hands

Eucharist is another sacrament of initiation into the Church. It is also called the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. We receive this sacrament frequently. The celebrant for the consecration is a Bishop or priest. The mass has two main parts, the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist (p.224-225). The essentials of the rite include changing bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ by the words: "Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which will be given up for you....Take this, all of you, and drink from it: this is the cup of my blood of the new and everlasting covenant. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me." A sign of the Eucharist is Bread and Wine.
