Social Justice / Service Assignment Description

Dear Parents and Students,

In religion class we will be discussing social justice and service. My focus for the class on this topic is to start small. Although solving world hunger or bringing about world peace would be nice, I will try to focus on Christian behavior in the classroom and on the playground. We will be talking about things the students can do to make the community in which they live a better place. In the fall we will have a speaker from "My Sister's Place", which is a day shelter for homeless women and their children in Baltimore. We will pray for the women and those that provide service for the homeless. During Lent we will raise money to send to "My Sister's Place." At another time during the year we will learn about missionary work throughout the world and focus on Peru.

During this unit we will be discussing the Works of Mercy (page 223 in the religion book or see below). The attached assignment is a family assignment. It has two parts. The first part is for each family to list at least 4 ways you do service for others in your community. Some examples are praying for those in need, visiting a sick relative, shoveling the sidewalk of a neighbor (for free), getting the mail for someone when they are on vacation, collecting clothes for a charity, buying a gift for the giving tree at church, etc. You can use some of these or think of your own.

The second part of the assignment is to find an article from a newspaper or magazine that describes someone showing a work of mercy (p.223). Specific requirements are on the form on the next page. Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this assignment.

Respectfully yours,
Mrs. Chris Lorber
