The Ark and the dove

The Ark and Dove unit is a simulation of the voyage of the first settlers to Maryland from England in 1633/1634.  Your child will choose a name and occupation of a passenger on one of the ships.  Students will be writing journal entries from the perspective of his/her alias.  Each journal entry will be worth 10 - 15 points.  In addition to journal entries, students will be required to complete a challenge project worth 25 points (a list of options will be sent home next week).  A Fate Card accompanies each journal entry;  these are fun activities that do not affect the student's overall grade.  The points earned (or lost) for Fate Cards are used only for the ships' totals and are intended to add interest to the unit.  Students will complete an evaluation form at the end of the unit - this will be worth 5 points.

Grading criteria is as follows:

Journal entries        70 points total

Challenge projects  25 points total

Evaluation                 5 points total

                       =       100 points

97 - 100 A+

93 - 97   A

89 - 92   B+

85 - 89   B

80 - 84   C+

75 - 79    C

69 - 74    D

Below 69  - E

I will be collecting the Ark and Dove folders periodically throughout the unit for grading.  I have advised the children to take their folders home and have parents check journal entries for completeness and neatness before turning them in.  Before final grading the folders should be checked to make sure that all entries, pictures, drawings, maps, etc. are included, hole punched, and put on to brads.

If you have any questions about the unit or the folder, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Challenge Projects

Due Date November 20, 2009

You will work on one of the following Challenge Projects below at home.  The challenge project is not optional and is worth 25% of your grade.    If you come up with some project other than those listed below, make sure that it is related to either the voyage or early settlement in Mary Land, and that you approve it with me first.

SPEAKING  (25 points)

Read a book or biography and then role play the main character to the class.

Bring in samples of supplies the settlers may have taken with them and explain each to the class.  Present the supplies in a skit form to the class.

FILM MAKING  (25 points)

Make a three to four minute movie with a video camera.  Keep it simple.  Maybe show one thing that happened to you during your voyage to Mary Land.  For example, show how it must have been the night of the terrible storm.  The video can be made with other students in your class or another class, siblings, family members, neighbors, or friends.  Each student will receive 25 points (points will not be split).

WRITING  (25 points)

Write an original story taking place during the voyage to Mary Land.

 Write a research paper.

Write a set of poems about the trip of the Ark and the Dove or the Calverts.

Write a short biography about one of the famous Marylanders.

MODEL MAKING (25 points)

Make a model of the Ark or the Dove, or an Indian wigwam.

Make a model of the first Indian village the settlers inhabited.

Make a diorama of a scene from the voyage.

ILLUSTRATING (10 points)

Illustrate a scene from the voyage.

Make a drawing of the inside of the ship.
