Sixth Grade
St. Augustine School
Mrs. Madera

I would like to welcome you to sixth grade! I feel very blessed to be your teacher this year! This is my fifth year teaching at St. Augustine’s, but my thirteenth year of being in this school. That’s right…I too have walked these hallowed halls of St. Augustine, and have lived to tell the tale! Now, our children, Emma, who is in fourth grade, and Edward, who is in first grade, attend St. Augustine. It is wonderful to be back amidst such terrific students, parents, faculty, and staff!
I have high expectations of all of my students, and I hope that you will have high expectations of me as your teacher. Middle School is new to you, and can be a little scary, but always remember that in my classroom it is perfectly all right to make a mistake, but it is inexcusable not to try. I hope to guide you this year to a fantastic world of reading and writing literature, as well as, possibly performing a great piece of work!

“Preach the Gospel at all times…
…if necessary, use words.”-St. Francis of Assisi

You will have written homework on Monday through Thursday. In addition, twenty to thirty minutes of independent reading is expected. I do not like to give homework over the weekends knowing how crucial it is for everyone to have some “down time”. There are exceptions to this rule, however, and if it is a large project or writing activity which requires extra time, then I will be forced to do so.
Every student will be assigned a study buddy to write down assignments for absent students. However, I do not expect students who are sick with fever or flu to do school work. Missed homework can be made up over a couple of days after recovery. If in the event of a lengthy absence, homework will be modified for the student.

Usually, vocabulary quizzes are given within 7-10 school days of beginning a new unit. Out of the 20 vocabulary words, I select 10 for the students to study for their quiz. These words are posted in the room under the title, “Mrs. Madera’s Word Wall”. I give the students the word bank to copy the word from on the quiz. However, if students can not rewrite the word, spelling it correctly, from the top of the page, then it will be marked wrong. On average, two reviews are given to the class prior to the quiz.
Be respectful to self, others, and property-Keep self to self, follow directions the first time, speak politely to adults and peers.
Be considerate-Raise your hand to speak, do not interrupt or raise your hand while someone else is speaking, look at the speaker, walk quietly in the halls, and remember: Manners Count!
Be prepared-Have the books and supplies you need, do your homework and turn it in, remember to take home/return papers, wear the proper uniform.
Please remain seated in your assigned seats, while enjoying the company that surrounds you! Upon finishing your lunch, use this time to throw away your trash (and any other trash you may encounter along the way), get a drink of water, and/or use the restroom. Finally, if a parent is in the classroom, ask politely if you may leave your seat.
